Libra is the first Zodiac sign of the Autumn season. The sign Libra is symbolized by the scales, weighing decisions, opinions and justice. The glyph z looks like scales but also symbolizes the setting sun, shown as balance between day and night. The positive polarity of the Libra sign is balanced by the negative polarity of ruling planet, Venus. The air element allows Libras to be intelligent and communicative. The cardinal quality makes Libras active, initiative and aggressive, though not in an obvious way.

Our astrology training continues this month with the seventh zone of the Zodiac experience, Libra. Our zodiac journey moves into the mature, adult experience of relating to and considering someone other than themselves. Just as day and night become balanced, so does self and others. They find the self-centeredness of their past journey to be lonely, so the primal urge for partnership ensues, for both love and business. Autumn is just beginning and the idea of facing winter alone is distressing for Libras. The air element can make this search difficult as Libras discover the polarity of male and female relationships. Libras handle life best with a partnership, marrying young and sometimes often. Venus influences the romance and need for harmony, peace and beauty in all forms. Airy Libras have agile minds and tend to be more logical or intellectual than emotional. Even though peace and partnership is very important to Libras, they can still be somewhat selfish in their relationships and are often victim to being “in love with love”.

The key phrase of sun sign Libra is “I balance” as Libras weigh difficult decisions. Libras themselves are not always balanced, but like the scales, vacillating back and forth, constantly. They can be calm and charming at times, and then restless, quarrelsome and depressed the other times. Cardinal Libras can be so active at times, that periods of rest, even lethargy, are required to re-energize, often mistaken as laziness.

Libras are aware of the importance of social justice and are morally compelled to be seek fairness. Libras are known as the Peacemaker, sometimes at all costs. Since they often defer to a trusted ally to make the final decision, they can be seen as easily swayed and gullible. Libras hate generalities and exaggerations. They judge themselves harshly but they do not impose their own morality on others.

Physically, Libras’ appearance can be very refined with well-balanced features including dimples, pleasant smiles and Venus inspired curves. A Libras’ eyes are often deep blue or gray and their hair tends to silver prematurely. Airy Libras are very talkative yet good listeners. Libras love to entertain. Given their charm, good taste and desire to please people, Libras make the quintessential host.

Other Libra sun sign traits are easygoing, intelligent, gentleness, diplomatic, procrastination, pleasure-seeking, temperamental, romantic, flirtatious, frivolous, congenial, and determined.

The Moon relates to how we express our emotions, needs, and what makes us feel secure. When the Moon appears in Libra, avoiding discord and seeking harmony brings a feeling of security. A need for equality and partnership is heightened. Emotions are expressed in friendly, diplomatic ways but an overwhelming desire to be liked can result in evasiveness and “peace at any price” maneuvers.

Mercury influences how we think, study and communicate. When Mercury connects with Libra, thinking is intellectual, rational and fair. Discussion and conversation are preferred over argument. Artistic pursuits are supported by this placement, especially music.

Venus represents how we relate, what we value, how we handle finances, and our artistic nature. Venus is at home in Venus ruled Libra, amplifying the influence toward love, even resulting in being in love with love. Loving, harmonized relationships are highly valued. A desire for beauty and arts and balanced finances are heightened. Avoid self-indulgence of food and wine.

Mars relates to our physical stamina, sex drive, and how we use energy. The Mars in Libra, peaceful, romantic surroundings enhance the physical side of sexual endeavors. Energy levels ebb and flow. Laid back and peace seeking, it is advised to develop patience. Partnerships support success of projects. Marriage may occur later in life. Children may be gifted.

Jupiter influences how we seek to expand, grow and how we express our intellect. When Jupiter appears in Libra, friendly, warm affection is easily expressed. Expansion occurs through marriage and partnerships, sometimes hastily.  Personal interests may be sacrificed for harmony and indecision may result in never fully committing to one path. Be wary of potential legal issues.

Saturn is an expression of how we deal with authority and cope with serious issues personally, spiritually and societally. Saturn in the sign of Libra, a disciplined, serious attitude is offset by a pleasant, tactful demeanor. There is a tendency to be demanding and intolerant. Cooperation is encouraged rather than competiveness, especially in relationships.

Uranus relates to how we manifest personal individuality and humanitarian freedom, and where we experience change. Uranus in Libra can create a battle between the desire for partnership and the need for independence within relationships, resulting in unconventional or explosive partnerships. The desire for humanitarian or social justice is heightened. Reform of the legal system may be sought.

Neptune represents how we reveal our imagination and intuition, and where our illusionary blind spots exist. With the watery Neptune in the airy sign of Libra, a generation is influenced to see marriage as an interdependent unity. Deception and delusions threaten romantic love. Peace is sought and fought for during wartimes.

Pluto influences how we personally transform and regenerate. When Pluto aligned with Libra in 1971 through 1984, there was an increased sexual permissiveness. Relationships and social structures are revamped. Spice, honesty and equality is added to romantic partnerships. Legal systems and human rights issues are transformed in the area of birth control, death control and marriage.

Next month, we will continue our astrological journey by entering the watery, Pluto-ruled world of Scorpio, the Scorpion. Until then, may the waning sun highlight the beautiful, colorful canvas of the great mother earth in Autumn.
